Harvey Pekar's Cleveland

Harvey Pekar's Cleveland

A lifelong Cleveland resident, Harvey Pekar (1939-2010) pioneered autobiographical comics, mining the mundane for magic since 1976 in his ongoing American Splendor series. Harvey Pekar's Cleveland is sadly one of his last, but happily one of his most definitive graphic novels. It combines classic American Splendor-ous autobiographical anecdotes with key moments and characters in the city's history as relayed to us by Our Man and meticulously researched and rendered by artist Joseph Remnant. With an introduction by Alan Moore to boot!

American Splendor: Unsung Hero

American Splendor: Unsung Hero

Few authors are able to capture an honest snapshot of everyday life the way Harvey Pekar can. From ruminations on jazz musicians to back problems and traffic tickets, Pekar writes in a clear, unsentimental voice that not only explores the mundane, but celebrates it as well. This time out, Pekar focuses his sharp literary eye on Robert McNeill, an ordinary man who's lived an extraordinary life. McNeill recounts his time spent as a G.I. in Vietnam, on a tour through that surreal and horrific landscape that even now, thirty years later, we're struggling to define. Unsung Hero is a tale of cynicism and endurance, tempered by McNeill's distinct sense of humor and Pekar's touching wit.

American Splendor: Windfall

Continuing the amazing chronicle of the comic-book world's greatest autobiographer, focusing on the aftermath of one man's experiences with cancer. In "Flight to Chicago," Harvey and his wife Joyce experience frustration and exhaustion as a simple trip turns into an agonizing obstacle course. "Windfall Gained" tells the tale of tragedy turned to happy accident when Harvey's impatience on a snow-covered street turns to gold. Finally, in "Bloodletting," Harvey must face the difficult choice of surgery. This is an entertaining and informative look at one man's life, filled with all the drama and comedic pratfalls that we've come to expect from day-to-day existence.

The Quitter

The Quitter

In this virtuoso graphic novel, Harvey Pekar — whose American Book Award-winning seriesAmerican Splendor was the basis for the celebrated film of the same name — tells the story of his troubled teen years for the first time, when he would beat up any kid who looked at him wrong just to win the praise of his peers. And when he failed to impress, whether on the football team, in math class, in the Navy or on the job, he simply gave up. A true tour-de-force, THE QUITTER is the universal tale of a young man's search for himself through the frustrations, redemptions and complexities of ordinary life.

The stories in American Splendor concern the everyday life of Pekar in Cleveland, Ohio. Situations covered include Pekar's job as a file clerk at a Veteran's Administration hospital and his relations with work colleagues and patients there. There are also stories about Pekar and his relations with friends and family, including his third wife Joyce Brabner and their adopted daughter Danielle. Other stories concern everyday situations such as Pekar's troubles with his car, money, his health, and his concerns and anxieties in general.

Following the success of his critically praised graphic novel THE QUITTER, Harvey Pekar returned to Vertigo with this all-new AMERICAN SPLENDOR miniseries, celebrating 30 years of the series that first showed how, as Harvey would say, "ordinary life can be pretty complex stuff."

American Splendor (2008)

In 2006, comics legend Harvey Pekar brought his unsparing tales of ordinary life to Vertigo with an all-new run of AMERICAN SPLENDOR, the comic that, 30 years earlier, rose 'from the streets of Cleveland' and changed how we look at comics. Often imitated but never duplicated, Pekar proved that he still has the power to 'make mundane reality seem like the highest drama' (Entertainment Weekly) in his critically acclaimed Vertigo series. Now, Harvey Pekar is back with an all-new series of AMERICAN SPLENDOR, featuring his funniest, most poignant, somber and uplifting stories from the complex life of an ordinary man. Once again, the Vertigo AMERICAN SPLENDOR pairs Harvey with some of the most exciting, innovative artists currently in comics, including in this special premiere issue, David Lapham (YOUNG LIARS, Stray Bullets), Chris Weston (THE FILTH, Fantastic Four), Dean Haspiel (THE QUITTER, Brawl), Mike Hawthorne (THE UN-MEN, Queen and Country), John Lucas (THE EXTERMINATORS) and other luminaries from both the mainstream and indie worlds. In this issue, they join Harvey to chronicle his battles with stubborn sofas, short sighted magazine writers, treacherous front doorsteps and many more obstacles for Harvey to overcome in his pursuit of a fulfilling and meaningful existence.
