JSA All-Stars (2010)

JSA (1999)

JSA (1999)

After an initial arc that involved a battle against a younger version of the Legion of Super Heroes villain Mordru, and a stand alone Sand story, James Robinson left the title in the capable hands of Goyer's new writing partner, Geoff Johns. Soon to be a DC phenomenon, John's knowledge of superhero continuity and characterization propelled the comic for nearly the rest of its tenure and later guided the superhero team into a successful relaunch. Over the course of the title's run, the JSA battled many villains, including the likes of the Ultra-Humanite, Eclipso, Extant and the Gentleman Ghost. The series saw new members Hawkman, Captain Marvel, Jakeem Thunder, the second Mister Terrific and Hourman, a new Doctor Fate, and even the supposedly reformed villain Black Adam. The title debuted a new and deadly Crimson Avenger and delved into the nine lives of team member Wildcat.

Jonah Hex (2006)

Jonah Hex (2006)

Writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti brought western hero Jonah Hex back to the mainstream DC Universe after several well received Vertigo miniseries. The newest version of Jonah Hex returned the anti - hero to his hard core western roots, providing a series of tough, violent and atmospheric tales set at various tomes during Hex's life. The opening issue set the tone for what was to follow, as Hex was hired to find a missing boy - only to uncover a circus using captured children to fight dogs for the amusement of the crowd. Luke Ross's gritty art was the perfect match for the grim tales of DC's most famous bounty hunter.

Jonah Hex (1977)

Jonah Hex (1977)

In true normal fashion, disfigured gunman Jonah Hex rode his horse out of Weird Western Tales and into his own comic. It was a testament to the character's popularity, considering how conventional western themed comics had all but galloped off into the sunset. Then again, nothing was ever conventional about Jonah Hex. Longtime Hex scribe Michael Fleisher and artist Jose Luis Garcia Lopez detailed the bounty hunter travelling to Whalenberg, Tennessee, to locate Tommy Royden, the kidnapped son of a plantation owner. He eventually found Tommy, who had died after being forced to compete in a fight club-type promotion by racketeers Blackie Leclerc and Charlie Mange. After being apprehended and sealed ina coffin by Tommy's kidnappers, Hex escaped, then forced the promoters to fight at the edge of a cliff, where both fell to their deaths. Returning to the plantation with Tommy's coffin, Hex didn't wait around for payment this time. Witnessing a mother grieve over her son's coffin, he realized the family had already paid too much.
