Superman: The Return of Superman (1993)

Superman: The Return of Superman (1993)

A collection of the Return of Superman story line. After the death and funeral of Superman, multiple Supermen start appearing in Metropolis, all of them claiming to be the Man of Steel (well, not all of them, but we'll get to that later). There's Cyborg Superman, Superboy, Steel, and Eradicator. While the people aren't sure who is who, we quickly find out that Superboy is a clone of Superman, Steel is just a man trying to honor Metropolis's fallen hero, Eradicator is an age-old Kryptonian being sent to save the last of the Kryptonians, and Cyborg-Superman has something more sinister up his sleeve, as he works with Mongul to reshape Coast City in his image. The reader quickly comes to find out that the real Superman is back in action. After a long battle and Eradictor sacrificing himself, both Cyborg Superman and Mongul are defeated, and the real Superman reclaims his thrown. Everything is back to normal once again.

The Lovely Horrible Stuff

The Lovely Horrible Stuff

100 Pages! Money makes the world go round, as they say. And around. And around. Eddie Campbell is an award-winning graphic novelist (Alec, From Hell) whose work defies categorization. His latest book is a dizzying autobiographical investigation into MONEY. It's a voyage that takes him all the way from the imaginary wealth of Ponzi schemes to the real hard stuff on an obscure South Sea tropical island where he investigates the history of the stone money. This is no dry and dusty treatise on finance; any complexities are pleasingly reduced to the level of bubblegum trading cards. In here you will hear about the corporation that Campbell keeps under his bed; you will meet colorful historical characters and be taken on dangerous shark-infested sea adventures; and after that, we will all plunge to the depths to retrieve our loose change. Campbell's wry eye and vivid full-color artwork imbue the proceedings with real humanity, making The Lovely Horrible Stuff an investment that's worth every penny.

The Lagoon

The Lagoon

A haunting, lyrical graphic novel debut. A family is seduced by the song of the Creature from the Black Lagoon in talented young cartoonist Lilli Carre's first long-form work, and how each member reacts to the Creature's siren call in The Lagoon is the crux of the story. Carre experimented with nib pens and brushes while drawing this black-and-white graphic novel, giving the art a different feel from her previous, Eisner-and-Harvey-Award-nominated story, The Tale of Woodsman Pete. Lagoon was influenced by the films Creature from the Black Lagoon and Night of the Hunter, but reads more like the gothic family narratives of Flannery O'Connor. Rhythms - taps, the ticking of a metronome - are punctuated by silences that pace this "sound"-driven story.

Mata Hari

Mata Hari

Dancer. Courtesan. Spy. Executed by a French firing squad in 1917. 100 years on from her death, questions are still raised about her conviction. Now, the lesser-known, often tragic story of the woman who claimed she was born a princess, and died a figure of public hatred with no one to claim her body, is told by breakout talent writer Emma Beeby (Judge Dredd), artist Ariela Kristantina (Insexts), and colorist Pat Masioni drawing on biographies and released MI5 files. In this first part of a five-issue miniseries, we meet Mata Hari in prison at the end of her life as she writes her memoir--part romantic tale of a Javanese princess who performed ''sacred'' nude dances for Europe's elite, and part real-life saga of a disgraced wife and mother, who had everything she loved taken from her. But, as she sits trial for treason and espionage, we hear another tale: one of a flamboyant Dutch woman who became ''the most dangerous spy France has ever captured''a double agent who whored herself for secrets, lived a life of scandal, and loved only money. Leading us to ask... who was the real Mata Hari? * Mature readers.
